Artisan Story

With a legacy of craft that spans generations, the fantastic world of Bengal’s craftspeople remains unsurpassed in its beauty and extent. Craftsmanship in Bengal comes naturally to hundreds of thousands of unlettered people who weave myths, legends, and simple daily experiences into different forms of creativity that can change shape from day to day, yet maintain their consistency for centuries to enrich their lives. There are many different worlds contained within the geographical boundaries of Bengal. The world of its craftspeople, with their handmade goods and textiles, spans millennia and spreads across the length and breadth of the land.

Restored in 2015, in Murshidabad, West Bengal

Bari Kothi underwent restoration five years ago, sparking
our commitment to champion local artisans and sustainable practices. The launch
of this shop is our way of celebrating the heart and soul of Bengal – its
artisans.

Our mission has always been clear: empower artisans to
create high-quality, sustainable products. Each handcrafted item is unique,
narrating the distinct story of the skilled artisan who brought it to life.

We hope to be able to raise the dignity of our
rural artisan in our way and kindle interest and support for an unsurpassed
legacy of craft that spreads across the length and breadth of the land. Our
effort is to curate an undeniably unique selection of traditional art and craft
translated into a range of beautiful, contemporary products.

Craft conservation as a collective effort

Bari Kothi aims to make craft a sustainable livelihood forartisans and the next generations. By reaching new markets and creatingcontemporary products, we set in motion a cycle of repeat orders, making crafta lucrative work option for future generations in artist villages.

Promoting fair trade. Supporting the artisan

We endeavor to provide all our partners, artisans andcraftsmen access to a larger marketplace and a fairer price for their products, not just by promoting what they make, but also by helping them with ideas anddesigns to innovate and create relevant craft products that appeal to changingtastes and modern preferences.

Rewarding partnerships with a deserving force

Over the years, we have cultivated relationships with over 1000 artisans directly and through our associates. Our primary mission is to empower the Bengal artisan and lift a community of people who are typically left behind. By choosing to directly support artisans, craft-based organizations, and social causes, we help create a cycle of demand that nurtures hope, trust, and long-term relationships.

Supporting eco-friendly choices

Bari Kothi follows 13 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. While we do our best to promote eco-friendly choices to the best extent possible, there are a few exceptions where helping livelihoods may take precedence, simply due to our commitment to helping every craft form and every type of artisan from our hinterlands.
